Hello, blog/newsletter audience. If you’re receiving this, it’s probably because we’ve worked together, or discussed the prospect of such. Come with me as I embark upon the age-old digital journey of reminding my email list that I exist with a super stimulating and not boring newsletter.
Day Without Child Care
Client: Community Change
Role: DP
I was asked to film a demonstration in Waterbury, CT for the national Day Without Child Care. The client was collecting footage from around the country to show local communities gathering in support of better conditions for child care workers.
I had to run light without anywhere to keep my equipment, and wasn’t sure where the crowd would gather. I rolled with the Sakk to support camera, and a messenger bag with a lav kit and my vintage prime lenses. Typically, zooms are preferred for documentary work so you have the flexibility to re-frame in the moment. When manageable, I opt for my Zeiss Contax primes because they are faster (wider aperture, f/1.4 vs f/2.8) and their rendering is full of character (they look pretty).
I mostly stay on the 50mm to pick off crowd action, details, and portraits, and switch to the 85mm when I want the shot to feel more intimate, and the 28mm when I need to establish the scene or if I’m on the move with a subject.
